My approach is to create a tailor-made programme designed for you, taking into account your own personal and very specific position.

Training plans should include as much of your circumstances as possible in order to be truly effective, such as:

  • How many days a week you can train and the time available to you?

  • Do you want to include resistance or flexibility training, if so how could this affect your run training?

  • Do you only like to train outdoors or do you like to use treadmills for expediency, precision and even safety if it’s dark or icy outside?

  • What is the terrain like where you train. Flat, hilly, road, trail? How does this compare to the training required to achieve your goal?

  • Do you have an area that may need strengthening before pushing forward with certain training aspects. Are you a strong uphill runner, do you find running downhill painful?

  • And more…

Unfortunately, generic ‘off the shelf’ training plans don’t consider these, indeed how can they? They assume that we are all created equal, have the same free time to train, can do every workout as stated and have no issues.

Not only should a training plan consider the above, it should be fluid and flexible in order to adapt to any changes in personal circumstances.

It should, and I will, actively monitor:

  • Your energy / fatigue levels, how is the training affecting you?

  • Are you pushing too hard or not training at the right intensity?

  • Have you been ill, what can you do and how to adjust training?

  • Busy week at work, need to miss sessions. You have a holiday coming up, how should you maintain fitness or does it even matter?

  • And other such variables…
